After World War One, a lot more students began attending school and the demand for more teachers went up. When beginning school, basic subjects were taught including writing, reading, handwriting, and math. Later on, classes such as science, physical education, home economics, geography, and industrial arts became more common. When a student disrupted the class or purposefully disobeyed the teacher, he/she would be punished according to the teacher’s desires, whether that be by striking girls’ wrists with a ruler or standing in a corner after school. The students were usually sent home for lunch unless they’d brought their own.
